About the study
*
Increased body weight and obstructive sleep apnoea are strongly linked with one another. Very-low calorie diets have been shown to reduce weight and lower the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea. We invite you to participate in a pilot clinical trial that measures how rapid weight loss through diet and exercise affects body composition and obstructive sleep apnoea. For 12 weeks, participants will undergo either a very low energy diet (VLED) and exercise programme, or a VLED-only programme.
Eligibility Requirements
*
Men aged 18-55; Overweight or obese (BMI >27 or waist circumference >102cm if European, >90cm if non-European); Obstructive sleep apnoea diagnosed on a PSG with AHI>15 events/hr (i.e. moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea); Willing and medically able to participate in a supervised very low energy diet and exercise programme for a 12-week period

What's Involved
*
This study will involve the following visits: The Woolcock Institute in Glebe (4-5 visits): - 1 screening visit and 1-2 overnight visits for sleep studies - 2 clinic visits to discuss the changes in diet and exercise for the next stage of the programme The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (2 visits): - 1 visit for baseline testing and 1 visit for final testing A screening session will take place at the Woolcock Institute to ensure participants are eligible and safe to participate in the study. Those who have not had an overnight sleep study in the past 12 months will be asked to do one. Eligible participants will attend a baseline testing day at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and randomly allocated to one of two groups: Very Low Energy Diet (VLED) only: This group will undertake a 12-week VLED programme using meal replacement shakes to lose weight. VLED and High Intensity Functional Exercise: This group will undertake the same diet but will also take part in a supervised functional exercise programme through a gym local to their home. At the end of the 12 weeks, all participants will participate in a final testing day at the RPA Hospital and an overnight sleep study at the Woolcock Institute.
