ID 155: The COMPANION Study

About the study

The COMPANION Study: A Novel approaCh tO Manage symPtoms of nArcolepsy aNd Idiopathic hypersOmNia
Researchers at The University of Sydney and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research are conducting a 12-week study about whether a whole food diet or a whole food ketogenic diet improve symptoms of narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.

What's involved

1. Once study physician confirms eligibility, start whole food diet run-in phase for 3 weeks (removing ultra processed foods)
2. After 3 weeks, randomisation to either continuation of the whole food diet for 9 weeks, or whole food ketogenic diet (low carbohydrate) for 9 weeks.

All COMPANION participants receive nutrition support through telehealth consultations with a registered nutritionist. There are different questionnaires, diaries etc. required to be completed throughout the study.

Visits required

Two (2) in-clinic visits - All other consultations are remote; online or phone call.

Eligibility criteria

  • Formal diagnosis of narcolepsy type 1, narcolepsy type 2 or idiopathic hypersomnia by PSG/MSLT
  • 18 years old or over
  • BMI >18.5 kg/m2
  • Be willing to be involved in dietary change that may include animal protein and fat
  • Be willing to monitor ketones via finger-prick and urinary dipstick
  • Normal diet should be a standard diet with moderate or high carbohydrate level (above 130g carbohydrate/day)
  • Additional eligibility criteria apply
